Registration for Summer Academy now openPosted November 13, 2012
For high school students looking to get a jump-start on their college career, Abilene Christian University's Summer Academy is entering its second year of operation. Hosted by the Honors College, the academy offers three different summer sessions during which high school students can take ACU courses for college credit.
"Summer Academy gives students a great way to engage with the ACU culture while also allowing them to enjoy a dry run of their coming college experience," says academy director Dr. Kristina Davis, assistant professor of communication. “This is such a great opportunity for students to come and experience college at ACU before they leave high school.”
Summer Academy students are housed in ACU residence halls, eat their meals in the Bean, and interact with each other in planned activities around Abilene. Along with taking courses taught by ACU professors, the Session II camp will take a weekend excursion to ACU's JUST (Justice and Urban STudies) site in downtown Dallas at CitySquare (formerly Central Dallas Ministries). Session III offers a three-week experience in Oxford, England, where students will take an Introduction to Art class with Jack Maxwell, professor of art.
“These course are taught by some of our best Ph.D. faculty – the same professors teaching undergraduate and graduate students, leading research projects at national laboratories and authoring papers and books as experts in their fields,” says Davis.
Taught alongside the Summer Academy sessions, Speech and Debate camps will also be offered to high school students. The three camps offered are each designed to train students in basic and advanced techniques of speech and debate.
"Those camps will be led by Dena Counts, director of forensics and coach of ACU’s nationally ranked debate team, and Jeff Craig, one of the nation’s top debate students who led the nation with the most wins in team competition during his senior year at ACU," says Davis. "Their willingness to lead a team of ACU professors in debate and individual event training for a week at a price point of $699 can’t be matched.”
ACU is a vibrant, innovative, Christ-centered community that engages students in authentic spiritual and intellectual growth, equipping them to make a real difference in the world.
