Alum featured as designer/finalist on HGTV's Design Star

Posted May 17, 2012

ACU alumna and Abilene resident Rebecca "Bex" Hale ('97) will display her design expertise to the nation as a finalist on Season 7 of HGTV's Design Star television series. Chosen as one of the top 12 designers in the country, she will compete in various challenges, hoping to win the grand prize: her own show on HGTV. Series will premiere Tuesday, May 29 at 8 p.m.

Hale's extensive design background began when she earned a B.S. in industrial technology from ACU. She then opened Relics Home, a retail furniture store and interior design center in downtown Abilene. She currently assists commercial and residential clients both in Abilene and around the country.

Hale favors an "art eco" style that makes use of green design methods and industrial materials. One of her projects, a San Francisco restaurant remodel, used 100 percent recycled materials.

Hale believes her ACU education and broad professional experience will help her come out on top in the Design Star challenges. Finalists will be eliminated based on their work until only one contestant remains. Viewers may vote up to 10 times daily for the "fan favorite" designer.

The Design Star challenges include transforming a chiropractor’s office into the new Jenner Communications headquarters for the wealthy Kardashian clan. Hale also will create a Tinseltown-themed lounge for the 125th anniversary of Hollywood. The show will test on-camera skills in hosting challenges, as contestants will be invited to appear on the nationally syndicated CBS show The Talk, with Julie Chen and Aisha Tyler.

Design Star is hosted by David Bromstad, winner of Design Star Season 1. Other stars appearing on the show include HGTV designers Genevieve Gorder and Vern Yip; Kardashian mom Kris Jenner; entrepreneur and TV personality Daisy Fuentes; CSI: Crime Scene Investigation star and Emmy award-winning actress Marg Helgenberger; Entertainment Tonight host Mark Steines; multi-platinum recording artist and home remodeling expert Vanilla Ice; and HGTV hosts Sabrina Soto (The High Low Project), John Colaneri and Anthony Carrino (Kitchen Cousins), and reigning HGTV Design Star, Meg Caswell (Great Rooms).
