ACU Recognized for Use of Mobile Technology

Posted August 04, 2011

Abilene Christian University’s Connected Program was named a winner of the Blackboard Catalyst Award for Mobile Innovation, which recognizes members of the education community who are using mobile technology to create a positive effect on students’ educational experience. Winners are helping define the emerging field of mobile technology for use in and beyond the classroom.

The Mobile Innovation Award is a new category in the Blackboard Catalyst Awards program. Created due to the rapid growth of mobile technology in education over the past year, the category has two subcategories: (1) Leadership in Mobile Teaching; and (2) Learning and Excellence in Mobile Application Development for Campus Services. Winners have committed themselves to formalizing, implementing and measuring the impact of mobile learning at their organizations and/or creating a truly unique campus service via a mobile platform.

“This recognition is yet more evidence that ACU’s decision to accelerate our mobile learning program to a fully saturated campus last year was the right decision,” said George Saltsman, executive director of ACU’s Adams Center for Teaching & Learning.  “Our mobile learning experiments confirm student engagement is increasing.”

“The Blackboard Catalyst Award winners truly represent the best in innovative thinking and best practices in education,” said Ray Henderson, president of Blackboard Learn. “Their work sets a great example for the millions of educators and students using our teaching and learning solutions every day as part of the global community of practice. We’re pleased to recognize their contributions and celebrate their accomplishments.”

Saltsman, Dr. Ian Spepherd, Associate Professor in ACU's Management Science Department, Jackie Hughes, educational media designer at ACU’s Adams Center, were honored alongside two other Mobile Innovation winners during BbWorld®, Blackboard’s annual user conference, held in July in Las Vegas, Nev.
