New degree available in digital entertainment

Abilene Christian University is offering a new means for students to go into the world for Christian service and leadership, with the creation of a degree in digital entertainment technology from the School of Information Technology and Computing.

“This type of degree is becoming popular to add from both the art and computer science perspective,” says Dr. Brian Burton, assistant professor of information technology. “I believe what we are offering is a unique approach to the industry that will make our students stand out.”

After the introduction of a minor in this area a year ago, classes began to fill up, and students started asking for a major to be formed, according to Burton.

“Many of our students want to go into the entertainment industry, and this degree prepares them to do so.”

The degree trains students to enter the game development field as level designers, technical artists or graphic artists, while learning the fundamentals of all the types of software used in developing games – from concept to publishing.

With the expanding handheld phone market, one of the focuses of the degree has become mobile gaming, for both educational and entertainment purposes.

“Students will be able to start their own game development company, work with game developers or take on any of the numerous new media jobs being created daily,” says Burton. "Ultimately, this new degree will prepare our students to make a difference in an industry where Christian leadership is most definitely needed.”
