Morris & Mitchell celebrates grand openingPosted October 25, 2010
Abilene Christian University’s new student-run advertising and public relations agency, Morris & Mitchell, is officially open for business. From its humble beginnings in a small closet on the third floor of Don Morris, the agency now has its own space and a team of 20 advertising/public relations majors.
“This new agency will give students the kind of experience that will prepare them for the workplace,” says Dr. Cheryl Bacon, chair of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication.
Elise Mitchell, ACU alumna and CEO of Mitchell Communications Group, spoke to group members as well as to the Abilene chapter of American Advertising and the Abilene Public Relations Organization at M&M's grand opening event. Mitchell's Arkansas-based agency counts Walmart, Sam’s Club, Tyson Foods, J.B. Hunt Transport Services and the Walmart Family Foundation among its clients. The wife of an orthopedic surgeon and the mother of two teenagers, she started her agency in 1995. Mitchell also has funded scholarships at ACU.
“I’ve been blessed,” she said. “I’m very fortunate to be able to do something that has impact and meaning."
“ACU’s journalism and digital media students have had opportunities on campus for real, hands-on experience, but the opening of Morris & Mitchell marks the first opportunity for advertising and public relations students to have the same experience,” says Joyce Haley, instructor of journalism and mass communication and faculty advisor for Morris & Mitchell.
The agency has already completed projects for clients like ACU Opera Theater and Christian Village and is eager for more opportunities, says Haley.
