National NPR program comes to AbilenePosted October 18, 2010
KACU-FM, Abilene’s National Public Radio affiliate, is gearing up to record the nationally broadcast "From the Top" direct from Abilene. The program, hosted by well-known concert pianist Christopher O'Riley, interviews young musicians and allows them to play their favorite classical compositions. The KACU-FM broadcast will be recorded Nov. 16 and will air nationally on NPR Dec. 27.
“'From the Top' inspires young classical musicians nationwide by showcasing other young classical artists and their achievements,” says Myra Dean, development director for KACU-FM. “Inspirational performances by these young students provide a vision for other young performers to reach higher and strive for excellence.”
One of Abilene’s own will be a featured performer during the broadcast. Pianist Halle Puckett, a 12-year-old student at Craig Middle School, will perform Moritz Moszkowski’s Etude in F major, Op. 72, No. 6.
"Halle Puckett is a true talent, and we are delighted this local artist was chosen to be a part of this prestigious program," says John Best, general manager of KACU-FM.
Celebrating its 10th year, NPR’s "From the Top" features performers from ages 8 to 18, with only three to five performing during each program.
Abilene’s segment will be recorded at First Baptist Church, and two of the performers will play the church’s $1.2 million Shelton organ. In addition to the organists and pianist, a cellist and marimba player will perform.
"From the Top" partners with the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation and New England Conservatory to offer scholarship opportunities, with more than $1 million in scholarships awarded to young musicians with financial need since 2005.
Seating for the broadcast is general admission, and tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for KACU members and $10 for students. For more ticket information, visit the KACU-FM website or call 325-674-2441.
