Speech and Debate Team continues in successPosted October 11, 2010
The ACU Speech and Debate Team continues to hold its own against stiff competition. ACU took three out of the top six speaker spots at the recent Forum in the Forest tournament sponsored by Rice University and Lone Star College-Kingwood.
“The success in this tournament against teams from The University of Texas at Austin and The University of Texas at Tyler continues our team's storied history at ACU,” says Dena Counts, director of forensics. "Ours was the first organization formed on the campus a century ago, and we have a long history of earning national titles.
The team of Jeff Craig, junior journalism major from Glenrose, Texas, and Jared Perkins, junior political science major from Peru, Ill., placed first in the Parliamentary Debate portion of the tournament, winning in the final round against Rice University.
“With their recent win in a University of Houston tournament in addition to this latest victory, Jeff and Jared are developing into one of the top debate teams in the country,” says Counts.
Craig was named top speaker for the tournament; Margaret Moore, junior education and youth and family ministry major from Houston, won the second speaker award; and Perkins won third top speaker.
Also, Brianna Bowman, senior communication major from Marble Falls, Texas, won fifth place with her persuasive speech titled "Swishing."
The 12-member Speech and Debate Team travels across the country competing against some of the top schools in the nation. Members excel not only in debate but also in persuasive, informative and extemporaneous speaking categories, as well as in dramatic events.
