ACU Study Abroad, pre-health professions students chillin' in Uruguay

Posted June 23, 2010

Montevideo SummerEscaping the summer heat of Texas to spend the winter in South America, 13 ACU pre-health professions students are participating in an ACU Study Abroad program based in Montevideo, Uruguay.

Cynthia Powell, professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and Dr. Ellen Little, the medical director of ACU Health Services, are leading the monthlong program.  Students are enjoying a variety of experiences in the program, according to Powell and Little.

"Monday through Wednesday of this week was dedicated to shadowing activities. We have a variety of opportunities that the Walkers (Wimon and Rosalinda Walker, resident directors of ACU in Latin America) have been able to arrange," said Powell. "Some students have shadowed in the pediatrics ward at the Hospital for Women and Children in Montevideo, some have gone to Hospital de Clinicas, and some to family practice clinics. It's a different experience to shadow in a clinic where only Spanish is spoken. We're looking forward to hearing all the stories the students have to tell after these few days."

Students are enrolled in six credit hours as a part of the program, a special topics course called Global Health Care and an international studies course focusing on the culture, values and worldviews in Latin America. As part of the program's academic structure, the group has spent several days in Buenos Aires, Argentina and traveled to Iguazu Falls, on the border of Brazil and Argentina. The students' final activity will be attending a Christian physicians conference at the beach resort town of Punta del Este in Uruguay.

One unique cultural experience ACU students are enjoying is cheering on the Uruguay national soccer team (known locally as the "Le Celeste Olimpica") during the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. With excitement building to feverish levels in Uruguay, given the country's advancement into the final 16 of the tournament, there is no doubt that students will come away with many great memories of their time in South America.

ACU Study Abroad offers semester-long and short-term programs in Oxford, England; Montevideo, Uruguay; and Leipzig, Germany; as well as select programs at locations around the world.
