The Accounting Education Foundation of the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants recently recognized two ACU accounting students, Caitlin Winegeart, senior accounting major from Abilene, and Jenni Burks, junior accounting and finance major from Weatherford, Texas, for their outstanding knowledge and ability in accounting.
Both students received their award March 31 at the Abilene chapter of the Texas Society of CPA's annual lunch meeting to recognize outstanding accounting students, which also honored students from Hardin-Simmons University and McMurry University.
"ACU appreciates the state society and local chapter of the Texas CPAs for their annual support of our accounting students as they begin their careers,” says Bill Fowler, associate professor of accounting and chair of the Department of Accounting and Finance.
Winegeart says that while interning last summer as an internal auditor at Walmart's headquarters in Bentonville, Ark., with students from all over the country and from several major public universities, she always felt prepared and current in terms of her accounting knowledge.
"My years as a COBA student in the accounting department have definitely prepared me for success in my future career," says Winegeart, awarded the annual senior award from the Texas Society of CPAs. "The skills and knowledge I gained from my professors have given me a solid foundation to excel in accounting, both academically and in the business world."
Burks, who won the $1,500 junior scholarship for ACU from the Abilene chapter of the Texas Society of CPAs says, "COBA prepares its students to excel in accounting. I think the department does a wonderful job of not only teaching the curriculum, but also assisting its students in their post-graduation decisions."
With an increased flexibility in spring class scheduling, COBA seniors are given the option of pursuing spring internships. "With the big accounting firms largely hiring from their spring interns, this option will allow ACU students to compete with students from bigger universities," says Burks.
