ACU Opera brings Cinderella story to life with Massenet's Cendrillon

CendrillonThe Abilene Christian University Department of Music will present Massenet's Cendrillon April 9-10 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium on the ACU campus, with performances each night at 8 p.m.

Produced and directed by Samuel Cook, associate professor of music, the opera tells the traditional story of Cinderella and features an orchestra under the direction of Dr. Mike Scarborough, professor of music and director of choral activities.

"With exquisite costumes, a specially designed set, the orchestral accompaniment and expressive singing by young up-coming student operatic stars, this operatic production of the timeless Cinderella story will be one of our most ambitious performances given in many years," says Cook.

The role of Cinderella is performed by both Jessica Lemmons, senior vocal performance major from Abilene, and Coretta Smith, senior vocal performance major from Mesquite, Texas. Two ACU Music Department alumni, Isaac Bray and Melanie Shaffer, are also returning as special guest performers.

Massenet's Cendrillon is essentially the familiar, kid-friendly Cinderella story with one exception, says Lemmons. She is not an orphan; her father is still alive but afraid of his wife's temper. "This is a truly beautiful show. Hearing the fairy godmother alone is worth the price of admission," says Lemmons.

"This show is unique because it takes the audience back into the magical world of fairytales," says Smith. "Everyone should come revisit their childhood and listen to the wonderful and colorful music of Cendrillon."

Seating is general admission, and ticket prices are $12 for adults and $5 for students. For more information about the opera or to purchase tickets, contact the ACU Department of Music at 325-674-2199.
