ACU Society of Physics Students chapter recognized for excellence
Posted March 02, 2010Abilene Christian University's Physics department is a world-class program offering research opportunities for undergrads and unique learning opportunities. The Society of Physics Students has recognized ACU's SPS chapter as one of the best in the nation, naming ACU an Outstanding SPS Chapter for the 2008-09 school year.
"ACU has been named an outstanding chapter eight of the last nine years, and that's a tribute to the hard work of our students and the enthusiasm of our student leaders," says Dr. Josh Willis, an assistant professor of physics and head of ACU's SPS chapter.
ACU's chapter was selected because of the depth and breadth of physics research, public science outreach, physics tutoring programs, hosting of and representation at physics meetings and social interaction opportunities for physics students, according to the national organization's website.
ACU's SPS chapter includes more than twenty physics students. They organize a weekly chapel, host a social activity each semester, and present at conferences in Texas every year. They also share their knowledge with the community, helping local scouts earn their Nuclear Science merit badges and organizing public forums for scientific discussion.
