Emmy award-winner to speak at ACU Careers in Sports event
Lance Barrow, CBS sports producer and ACU alumnus, will speak to students at ACU's first Careers in Sports networking event on Wednesday, Sept. 16.
Barrow, a 10-time Emmy award-winning producer and 1977 graduate of ACU, will talk about his career and what it takes to break into sports broadcasting. The event is the first in a series sponsored by the university's Career Center to help students learn about and network with professionals in various fields.
Barrow, who is coordinating producer for golf and NFL coverage for CBS, ranks among the most influential figures in sports broadcast journalism. He's the prime force behind broadcasts that transport the exploits of Tiger Woods and Tom Brady to millions.
"The opportunity to hear from Lance Barrow, the person who brings the NFL and PGA into the living rooms of millions of Americans, will help students see what it takes to make their dreams a reality," said Tim Johnston, executive director of ACU's Career Center. "When students interact with professionals, they gain insights into what they need to do today to be prepared for future opportunities."
The Careers in Sports event also will offer an opportunity for students to network with sports professionals Lance Fleming, former reporter and now ACU sports information director; Grant Boone, former announcer for the Golf Channel and now the voice of ACU sports; and Jared Mosley, ACU athletic director.
In addition, students will have an opportunity to talk to other students who have recently interned with CBS Sports, the Olympics and the Houston Astros. The Career Center staff will encourage students to participate in a new career development program, EX-Factor.
"We are unveiling our new EX-factor program that teaches students how to gain career-related experience and make connections with ACU alumni working in their fields of interest," said Johnston.
Careers in Sports will begin at 5 p.m. in the Hunter Welcome Center on the ACU campus and will include free ice cream and drawings for sports-related prizes. The formal session ends at 6:30 p.m., with networking opportunities until 7 p.m.
