During Spring Break, two ACU freshman debate teams competed at Novice Nationals, earning second and tenth place. This national tournament attracted the top novice debate teams in the nation from several universities including: University of Houston, University of Alabama, University of Tennessee, San Jose State University and the University of Michigan. To qualify as a "novice" debate team, participants must be in their first year of collegiate debate.
"This year has been year of growth for everyone." said Jeff Craig, freshman journalism major from Granbury. "Our team consists only of individuals competing in collegiate speech and debate for the first time, and so any success we have had can be attributed to the excellent coaching of Dena Counts and our Graduate Assistant Jason Allen."
ACU student Novice Nationals debate title recipients include:
• Team Jeff Craig and Keri Gray, freshman political science major from Longview, won second place in parliamentary debate.
• Margaret Moore, freshman secondary education and youth and family ministry major from Houston, and Kaytlin Wiseman, freshman communication major from Glen Rose, won tenth in parliamentary debate.
• Craig also won second place in impromptu speaking and fifth place in extemporaneous speaking.
"I feel our commitment to each other has been vital to our successes, much of the time we feel more like a family than a team," said Craig. "We are definitely laying a strong foundation for representing ACU and its mission in the future."
