Abilene Christian University students come from all over the world, bringing a global perspective to Abilene. On April 9, ACU's International Students Association, ACU Model U.N., social justice groups from around the city and the Center for Contemporary Arts are joining forces to introduce the many nations and cultures represented in Abilene to the community at ArtWalk.
The theme of the evening is "Earth Day," and students hope to not only demonstrate their various cultures, but also show Abilenians the social conditions in those nations and encourage people to make a difference through social justice.
"The 'Earth Day' will be a moment to share and celebrate the diversity of the various cultures and nations represented in Abilene, as well as to increase awareness about social justice in the countries," said Marie Manishimwe, with ACU’s Model U.N. team. "It will include multicultural art displays, selling of crafts, jewelry, samples of teas from all over the world, and cultural performances and some local musical bands."
There will be internationally-themed art exhibits by students, booths selling crafts and fair trade items, a tea ceremony, live bands and representatives from social justice groups like Wishing Well, International Justice Mission, TOMS Shoes, ACU for Fair Trade and ACU International Rescue Committee. A concert will be held in Minter Park, with bands playing to raise support for these social groups.
"Earth Day" ArtWalk is Thursday, April 9 in downtown Abilene, at the intersection of Pine and Cypress, 5:30-8:30 p.m.
