ACU remembers longtime Bible professor

Dr. Henry E. Speck Jr., professor emeritus of Bible at Abilene Christian University, passed away Wednesday, March 18 in Abilene at the age of 91. Speck was an ACU faculty member for almost 30 years.

"Henry Speck was a giant - a pioneer in Christian Education, an engaging preacher, a compassionate counselor, and an exemplary professor during some of the most important decades in ACU's history," said Dr. Jack Reese, dean of the College of Biblical Studies at ACU. "His legacy will remain with us for years to come."

Speck, along with his wife, Beatrice, began their careers at ACU in 1959. Prior to that, Speck served as minister for Churches of Christ in Austin, Lubbock and Norman, Okla., and also has taught at The University of Texas at Austin. In 1972, Speck took a leave of absence from teaching at ACU to serve as the president of the Christian College of the Southwest in Dallas for two years.

During World War II and the Korean War, Speck served two tours as a chaplain in the U.S. Army.  He participated in mission campaigns in the United States, England, Scandinavia and the Philippines.

Speck earned a bachelor's degree in math and physics and a master's degree in education from Southwest Texas State University. In 1951, he earned his doctorate in education from The University of Texas at Austin.

"Those of us who took his classes were touched directly by his work," Reese said. "We will remember him with many smiles and with deep gratitude."

Speck is survived by his wife, Dr. Beatrice Speck, and his son, Dr. Henry Speck III. Funeral arrangements are pending at this time with Piersall-Benton Funeral Home.
