For millions of college students across the country, Spring Break is a time for relaxing and getting away from the grind of college. Students at Abilene Christian University are looking forward to getting away, but they will spend their weeklong hiatus serving others.Hundreds of ACU students will spend their Spring Break in service to communities in the United States and around the world, March 17-23. As part of the Spring Break Campaigns program, the students will volunteer in 23 cities across the United States, including Anchorage and New Orleans and throughout the world in the countries of Costa Rica, Mexico and Nicaragua.
"The mission of Spring Break Campaigns is to become the hands of Christ in service, the feet which bring good news, the arms which comfort the poor in spirit, and to come together as the body of Christ," said Faith Brodie, a student Spring Break Campaigns coordinator. "The students of Abilene Christian University enjoy participating in Spring Break Campaigns because they thrive on stepping into their responsibility and call to make an impact in their communities."
Student groups will serve in a variety of ways including building churches, leading Vacation Bible School, working with high school students and ministering to the homeless.
Spring Break Campaigns are student-led, short-term missions that are dedicated to impacting lives through Christ-like service throughout the world.
"The focus of ACU is to apply what is being learned in the classroom out in the world, and put thoughts into action," Brodie said.
For the first time, a campaign will stay in Abilene and serve the local community. These students will work with the homeless and those in assisted living homes, while also leading a Vacation Bible School for local children.
ACU students have been serving others as a part of Spring Break Campaigns for more than 30 years. The idea for Spring Break Campaigns was created by well-known Christian author Max Lucado, who graduated from ACU in 1977. For more information on Spring Break Campaigns, visit http://www.acusbc.org/.
