Abilene Christian University alumnus Dr. Robert Kelley (’65), was recently named the University of North Dakota's 11th president. Kelley, who was recommended by the UND Presidential Search Committee and selected by the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education, will begin his presidential duties July 1, 2008.
"We are so proud of Dr. Kelley's accomplishments and his most recent selection as president of the University of North Dakota," said Dr. Royce Money, ACU president. "I know he'll be successful in this new position."
Kelley earned his bachelor's degree in biology and chemistry from ACU, and received a master's and a doctorate degree in both cell and developmental biology, from the University of California, Berkeley.
Since 1999, Kelley has been dean of the College of Health Sciences and professor of medical education and public health at the University of Wyoming. Prior to that, he was associate vice chancellor for research and executive associate dean of the graduate college, professor of biological sciences at the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and professor of anatomy and cell biology at the College of Medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Kelley also spent time at the University of New Mexico, where he served as chair of anatomy and senior executive associate dean. He has also taught at the University of California, Berkeley.
Kelley has chaired the Assembly for the Association of American Medical Colleges and the Council of Academic Societies for the AAMC. He was a member of the executive board of the National Board of Medical Examiners and served the National Institutes of Health in various capacities, including his current role as principal investigator for the University of Wyoming/Northern Rockies IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence.
Kelley will succeed Dr. Charles Kupchella as president of UND, which has more than 15,000 students enrolled.
He is married to Marcia Bell Kelley, who lectures in the University of Wyoming’s Department of Communication Disorders. The couple has four children.
