During the week of Jan. 28, Abilene
Christian University faculty, staff and students will have the opportunity to
learn more about lifestyle choices they can make to positively affect the
climate and the environment. ACU is participating in a nationwide concentration
on environmental issues facilitated by the Focus the Nation initiative.
The week will kick-off on Monday
with a special Chapel address by Dr. Royce Money, president of ACU. Additional
activities will include lectures, discussion groups, a tree planting ceremony,
as well as a 10-day competition between residence halls. ACU Unplugged will
begin Jan. 29 and record the energy usage in each residence hall. The hall that
has the greatest improvement over their energy usage in the fall will win.
"I feel many students have the desire to be a part of something that is bigger than them, and helping protect the environment is an outlet for this," said Beth McElwain, senior education major from Farmersville. "Climate week will provide many events in which students can participate and be informed of environmental awareness opportunities."
"How we care for the earth affects the livelihood of people living today and in the future," said Dr. Monty Lynn, ACU professor of Management. "As a university, we are working to reduce our ecological footprint, steward our resources well, and celebrate the wonder of creation."ACU students, faculty and staff can also take part in Climate Week by completing the Sustainability Pledge found on ACU's green initiative website.
