The Abilene City Council will consider a request from ACU Thursday to provide in-kind assistance – primarily labor and equipment – to prepare land for park-like green spaces on both sides of Ambler Avenue, a primary entrance into Abilene from Interstate 20, said Kevin Watson, ACU associate vice president for administrative services.
"The city's contribution is to provide in-kind services, such as clearing and resculpturing Rainy Creek and preparing the right-of-way on both sides of Ambler worth up to 30 percent of the project's estimated costs; ACU will provide the remainder of the approximately $3 million," Watson said. "The city will only provide labor and equipment, not money."
The university will maintain the green spaces once the city prepares them, and they will be open for public use, Watson said. The city is interested in this development because of its interest in beautifying the city entranceways.
"We plan to plant native grasses and plants that will require minimal watering," Watson said. "The welcoming green space provided through this partnership will dramatically improve the first impression of visitors into our community."
