ACU students to participate in service learning trip to Honduras Jan. 3-8
Eight Abilene Christian University students will travel to Chouleteca, Honduras as part of a guided study trip to help Mission Lazarus, a Honduran outreach and ministry organization, Jan. 3-8. The students will earn credit and engage in service learning as they create promotional and marketing materials for the organization.
Those participating are all students from the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication and the College of Business Administration. They will be supervised by Dr. Monty Lynn, professor of management sciences, and Joyce Haley, adjunct professor in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication. The students will work in three small teams to update all of Mission Lazarus' print and video marketing tools and create a long-term development plan.
"Many students today are looking for opportunities to be social entrepreneurs, to apply their learning from ACU to the needs of people," said Lynn. "We're going with a strong desire to contribute to an already effective ministry, but as is always the case, the students will be the ones most changed; they will experience an environment much different than their own and will be challenged to put their academic training in action."
The teams of students will have five days in Honduras to complete the on-site portion of the work for the organization. Some of the students have also elected to complete additional assignments before and after the trip.
"The students will gain hands-on experience in consulting and project management … this is real-world experience in a developing country," said Lynn. "Joyce and I are excited about the team and working with the students. The students going are incredibly talented and motivated."
Mission Lazarus was founded in 1999 by ACU alumnus Jarrod Brown. The holistic humanitarian organization seeks to minister to the Honduran people through early childhood education, agriculture, adult education, medicine, and evangelism programs.
