What is Summer Seminar in Missions?

Summer Seminar in Missions is a one and a half week period consisting of undergraduate and graduate courses in missions.  Summer Seminar is May 15-23 and includes a three-day workshop called Mission Focus (May 15-17).  During Mission Focus, students and church leaders will learn from visiting speaker Dr. Tom Wymore on the topic, "Empowered Coaching."  Mission Focus is a course requirement.

How do I register for classes?

Undergraduate classes are offered to students who wish to earn course credit or Continuing Education Units (CEUs).  Applicable fees apply.

  • ACU students, wishing to take a course for credit, register online with the Registrar’s Office as you would with any other course.  Please have your advising code.  If you want to apply for a scholarship you must submit an application to the Halbert Institute for Missions office. Download application
  • ACU students, wishing to take a course for CEUs, must submit a Summer Seminar in Missions application to the Halbert Institute for Missions office. Download application
  • Non-ACU undergraduate students who wish to receive credit for a class must apply for admission to ACU from the Registrar’s office as a Special Student.  Please contact the Halbert Institute for Missions office at (325) 674-3711 or email missions@acu.edu for further information.
  • Non-ACU students, who wish to take a course for CEUs, must submit a Summer Seminar in Missions application to the Halbert Institute for Missions office.  Download application.

Graduate classes are offered to students who hold a bachelor's degree.  Current ACU graduate students, wishing to take a course for credit, should talk to your advisor. Current ACU graduate students, wishing to take a course for CEUs, must submit a Summer Seminar in Missions application to the Halbert Institute for Missions office.   2. For course credit, but no admission into a degree program, a non-degree application is available for downloading.  A $10.00 application fee must accompany your application.  An official transcript showing a completed bachelor’s degree must be sent to ACU’s Graduate School from the awarding institution.  These items should be sent to the address provided on the application form. 

Non-ACU students, wishing to take a course for Continuing Education Units (CEUs), must submit a Summer Seminar in Missions application to the Halbert Institute for Missions office.  Download application.

What is the difference between taking a course for credit or for Continuing Education Units (CEUs)?

  • Courses taken for credit will incur these costs: tuition and all other ACU fees.  Any scholarship monies will be applied to the tuition portion of your bill and room and board, if applicable.  Each course is awarded 3 college hours.
  • Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are awarded when a course is taken and the required class work is completed with a passing grade.  A $125.00 course fee will be charged, in addition to the $25.00 Mission Focus Workshop fee.  The fees are paid directly to the Halbert Institute for Missions, ACU Box 29433, Abilene, TX 79699.  CEUs cannot later be changed to academic credit.
  • WorldWide Witness students will be required to take a Summer Seminar in Missions class for credit or for Continuing Education Units.

Are scholarships for Summer Seminar in Missions available?

  • Yes!  Generous scholarships will be awarded, especially to those who have mission plans.  Download a scholarship application.  If you have not attended Seminar before you will need 3 personal references in order to be eligible for a scholarship. Download reference forms. If you have attended before you will only be required to fill out an application.  Scholarships that are awarded will apply to tuition, housing, and the meal plan.  Please submit your Summer Seminar in Missions application, scholarship application, and references by April 15, 2008.
  • For graduate students your existing scholarship applies towards tuition.  
  • Scholarships do not apply to the Continuing Education Units (CEUs) registration fee or the Mission Focus Workshop fee. These fees, totaling $150.00, must be paid to the Halbert Institute for Missions.  However, you may apply for a scholarship to cover housing and the meal plan.

What if I have attended Summer Seminar in Missions before?

You still need to fill out a Summer Seminar in Missions application.  If you wish to apply for a scholarship you must submit a scholarship application.  You will not need to submit references.

What are the costs for Summer Seminar in Missions?

See the breakdown of fees.  There is a $25.00 fee for the Mission Focus Workshop.  This fee will be assessed automatically when you register online to take the course for credit.  If you are planning to take the course for CEUs, you will pay the fee to the Halbert Institute for Missions office. The registration fee for a CEU course is $125.00.

What about housing and meals?

  • Housing will be provided upon request and is subject to availability. Please provide your own linens and towels.  Check in times will be emailed to you.  See the breakdown of fees
  • Meals will be provided on campus for those who purchase a meal plan.  You may purchase the meal plan by designating your needs on the SSM application. See the breakdown of fees
  • Breakfast will be offered on Saturday, May 17, as part of the Mission Focus Workshop, for thos who purchase a meal plan.
  • Lunch and dinner will NOT be offered on Saturday, May 17.  No meals will be provided on Sunday, May 18.  There are numerous fast food places and restaurants nearby.
