TEDxACU to host youth event on campus

Posted October 27, 2015

TEDxACU will give 7th- through 12-graders the opportunity to explore their future through its first TEDxYouth event to be streamed live on the Abilene Christian University campus Saturday, Nov. 14.

The theme for the international event is “Made in the Future” and will feature talks by artists, Disney imagineers and NASA scientists, among others, said Dr. Lauren Lemley, assistant professor of communication and director of TEDxACU. There will also be several student speakers, she said.

The event will take place in Cullen Auditorium from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a live stream from the international TEDxYouth event in New York City. In between presentations, students at the local event will participate in activities to encourage discussion and interaction, Lemley said.

Lemley said the purpose of the theme is to explore what life will be like in the year 2035 when the students are adults. One of TED’s questions for the event is “What if your career hasn’t been invented yet?”

“There’s value in empowering young adults to be active in thinking outside the box about their future,” Lemley said.

Tickets are $10 each, and students must register with an adult chaperone who can attend for free. The cost covers food and supplies for various activities. Students can come individually or as a group of up to 10 students per adult. Tickets are available at tedxacu.org/tedxyouth on a first-come basis and will be sold at the door unless the event sells out.

ACU student interns and student ambassadors will help with the activities, which are designed to help students meet new people, interact with each other and discuss the presentations, said Lemley.

“It’s also a way to help young adults think about college,” she added.

Lemley said groups such as academic clubs or scouts may be interested in attending together

TED is an international non-profit that uses short presentations to spread ideas throughout the world online and through conferences.
