ACU Hispanic honor society gets national award

Posted September 30, 2015

The Abilene Christian University chapter of Sigma Delta Pi, a national Hispanic honor society, was named a National Honor Chapter for the third consecutive year. Sigma Delta Pi is the only collegiate and the largest foreign language honor society in the United States.

From more than 600 chapters around the country, the ACU chapter was one of 12 chosen for national recognition.

“This is a big honor for ACU because we were being compared with much larger universities,” said Dr. Beatriz Walker, associate professor of Spanish and adviser for SDP. “The honor is based on the work our students have done during the year. In the last three years, for example, students have worked translating documents for organizations such as the Texas Parent/Teacher Association, Christian Homes of Abilene, ACU Speech Clinic and many more.”

The award is another indicator that Abilene Christian is continuing to build its national brand and recognition.

“This achievement brings honor to our Department of Language and Literature, and to our university as a whole,” Walker said. “It shows that our Spanish program is solid, preparing students who can use their second language in real-life situations. Students not only provide service through their newly acquired language skills, they have also excelled academically, presenting papers at the Cefiro Conference at Texas Tech University and have worked on research that was presented at the undergraduate research festival.”
