Former Walmart CEO to speak at October lunchPosted October 14, 2014
Former Walmart chief executive officer Mike Duke is the featured speaker for ACU's Fall 2014 Distinguished Speaker luncheon, to be held Oct. 14 at 11:45 a.m. in the Hunter Welcome Center.
Duke, who joined Walmart in 1995, currently chairs the executive committee of the company’s board of directors. During his five-year tenure as CEO, he helped Walmart navigate a period of dramatic economic, social and technological change, while delivering strong financial results. Duke put in place the building blocks for the company’s future by making critical investments in technology and talent, including a strong management team. He also broadened Walmart’s commitment to lead on some of the most pressing social and environmental issues of our time. He has long been a champion for diversity and was especially engaged in the advancement of women, both inside and outside the company.
"We are honored to host Mike on the ACU campus this fall. His colleagues know him as the CEO who exemplified servant leadership, combined with competence and competitiveness, in his recipe for success,” says Dr. Rick Lytle, dean of the College of Business Administration. “We are grateful to be among those few universities Mike has chosen to visit in the last few years.”
“Mike is a good and godly man with a distinguished career, great family, and great marriage,” continues Lytle. “Mike's long list of accomplishments is underpinned by a strong faith, love for family, and hard work. He is a personal friend of mine and I am delighted we are able to offer this incredible learning opportunity to the ACU faculty and staff.”
Duke serves on the board of directors of The Consumer Goods Forum, the executive committee of Business Roundtable and is on the executive board of Conservation International's Center for Environment Leadership in Business. He also serves on the board of advisers for the University of Arkansas and the advisory board of the Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management in Beijing, China. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering. Duke graduated from Georgia Tech with a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering. He and his wife, Susan, have two daughters and a son.
