ACU Professors Write Book to Help Students SucceedPosted July 17, 2014
With their new book, 21 Strategies for Starting College Strong, ACU faculty members Jason Morris, Houston Heflin and Heidi Morris say they’re trying to help adult learners navigate technology and online learning, achieve academic success and manage their higher education experience.
Adult learners must often times balance family and work obligations in addition to returning to a university and the challenge for them may be learning how much college has changed since they were first there.
“Many times, adult learners coming back into a university environment have a difficult time making the transition,” says Morris, a two-time Fulbright recipient. “Our goal is to assist them with their transition and ultimately help them succeed."
Dr. Morris is coauthor of The Best Scholarships for the Best Students and currently serves as interim dean of ACU’s Honors College, assistant professor of higher education, and program director of the M.Ed. in higher education. He is an expert on the U.S. higher education system, he has lectured internationally on a variety of educational topics and published articles in several national academic journals.
Dr. Houston Heflin received an Ed.D. from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and is an assistant professor of practical theology at ACU. He is also director of the freshman mentoring program for the university’s College of Biblical Studies.
Dr. Heidi Morris received her Ph.D. from Texas Woman’s University and her master’s degree in marriage and family therapy from ACU. She is a licensed professional counselor, an adjunct professor for the Department of Marriage and Family Studies at ACU, and an experienced guest speaker at conferences, schools and churches.
“Success in college, no matter the age of the student, requires strong dedication and purposeful intention,” says Morris. “It is also about succeeding in and out of the classroom. Our book helps to better equip college students with necessary skills and strategies that they can utilize in achieving a rewarding and successful college experience.”
