Students tour NYC firms, stock exchange

Posted October 08, 2013

For two dozen ACU students, it may well be the trip of a lifetime. They and their four faculty/staff chaperones are roaming the caverns and corporate centers of Wall Street, meeting with executives from companies like Johnson & Johnson, Magnet Media, Dentsu American, CNN and the NBA.

"We were just on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange this morning," says senior Savannah Smith. "My classmates and I were able to talk with money managers and traders all over the floor while we learned the inside scoop on companies we've been studying about on campus. We're seeing the application of how much of what we learn plays out in the real world."

Students touring the NYSE were hosted by ACU graduate Brandon Baker ('98), the organization's vice president of information technology.

"I like to make sure students understand that we have grads like Brandon working and succeeding in the single most competitive business work environment in the country – New York City," says Dave Swearingen, executive-in-residence for the College of Business Administration. "The work our grads are doing in places like the stock exchange is proof that our students have just as much potential as a Harvard or Yale grad – and they balance faith and work on top of that.

Swearingen adds, "If there's anything business needs more of, it is Christians who bring their ethics and values into the marketplace. That's what ACU students and grads do."

Over the next few days, the student group from ACU's College of Business Administration will meet with ACU grad Elise Mitchell, CEO in charge of public relations and acquisitions for Dentsu America.

"The value for our students of seeing executives like Elise in the environments where they work can't be understated," says Joyce Haley, faculty advisor for Morris & Mitchell, ACU’s student-run advertising/public relations agency. "This broadens their horizons and helps them make the connection that 'I can do this because I know someone like me has come here and made it already.' That empowers students to have a bigger picture of what's possible."
