Master of Arts track in Theology

The M.A. track in Theology develops students as readers, writers, and thinkers through critical and constructive engagement with the Christian tradition and contemporary scholarship. Accordingly, the degree cultivates fair-minded, informed, and well-prepared students for academic work and ministry.

Courses focus on topics and figures within and outside the Christian tradition, and require engagement with primary sources rather than survey or introductory material. Students are trained to engage these sources well through class discussions and writing assignments. Term papers hone skills in argumentation and research, resulting in a clear defense of a precisely articulated claim. The thesis project is the culmination of the degree and is more akin to a small-scale doctoral dissertation than a typical master's thesis.
