Brown Library

Margaret and Herman Brown Library is at the heart of ACU's academic program. It includes the innovative Learning Commons, the Adams Center for Teaching and Learning, the Writing Center, the Speaking Center, and the AT&T Learning Studio.

Brown Library provides students with access to 1.5 million volumes and 1 million microforms held by ACU and other members of the Abilene Library Consortium. Students also can access more than 20,000 journals in print and online. The Gaines B. Stanley Theological Reading Room, the location of most biblical studies, theology and philosophy sources, holds more than 60,000 volumes and is a popular study place for GST students.

Because of its innovative technology and the availability of resources through the library holdings, Abilene Library Consortium, and fully subsidized interlibrary loan program, the Brown Library is a premier theological library among schools associated with the Stone-Campbell Movement and one of the best libraries of its region.

From practical theology and homiletics to philosophical or systematic theology, the resources available through the Brown Library fully equip students for their task. For more information about the theological holdings and resources follow the links to the library website or contact our Theological Librarian, Craig Churchill.

Gaines B. Stanley, Sr. Theological Reading Room

The Stanley Reading Room is the newly renovated library wing that is home to the majority of the Brown library biblical studies and theology holdings. Quiet work areas, computers, and reading chairs are sprinkled throughout the room to provide a uniquely conducive learning space for our students.

Interdisciplinary Collection

Because of the vast collection of resources in the Brown Library, students benefit from resource holdings across disciplines. In biblical studies and theology, the 60,000 volumes represent significant holdings across theological issues including subscriptions to major theological journals as well as lesser known, but significant, journals.

Abilene Library Consortium

Abilene Library Consortium is a regional nonprofit organization that assists libraries, museums, and other information organizations better serve the Abilene area through collaboration. Through the ALC, graduate students can have full access to the resources of Hardin-Simmons University Library, McMurry University Library, Howard Payne University Library, and all Abilene Public Libraries.

Fully-Subsidized Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary loan is a service that allows students to borrow books from other libraries around the world. Through ILL, virtually any book can be attained for students, meaning that student access to even the rarest of resources is almost limitless. By fully-subsidizing ILL, students have the unique opportunity to access the sources they need without having to worry about the normal costs that most libraries charge for ILL.

Center for Restoration Studies

The Center for Restoration Studies is a repository of books, archival materials, and artifacts connected with the Stone-Campbell Restoration Movement. It is one of the largest of its kind in the world and provides a host of resources for the study of Stone-Campbell History that cannot be found anywhere else.

Learning Commons

The ACU Learning Commons is a unique study and resources area centered around the concept of learning communities. It provides an opportunity for GST students to learn in community around fellow students and educational technology. The Learning Commons is home to the innovative AT&T Learning Studio, Starbucks, Copy Cat, the Writing Center, and Team 55 (student technical support). Abilene Christian University was one of the first Universities to adopt the model of the learning commons, and has become a leader for academic libraries nationwide.
