Honor Society

  • Phi Alpha Theta

Phi Alpha Theta is a professional society whose mission is to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians. We seek to bring students and teachers together for intellectual and social exchanges, which promote and assist historical research and publication by our members in a variety of ways.

Scholarship & Study Abroad Opportunities

The following scholarships and study abroad programs are not affiliated with ACU or the History & Global Studies department:

  • Critical Language Scholars Program (U.S. Department of State)
    The U.S. Department of State offers a fully funded summer language study program for undergraduate and graduate students. Applications for the following summer are due in November of the previous year. Click here to download a flyer, or click on the title above to visit the website.
  • Boren Awards for International Study
    The Boren Awards are scholarships intended for use towards a Study Abroad year or semester. If the scholarship is won, money can be used towards the study abroad program of your choice. However, acceptance of the award commits the awardee to seek work in the Federal Government for one year.

National WASP WWII Museum

Archival internships are available at The National WASP WWII Museum in Sweetwater, TX. Their mission is to educate and inspire all generations with the story of the WASP: Women Airforce Service Pilots – the first women to fly American military aircraft.

ACU Jennings House Museum
Application and information
ACU’s on-campus museum is offering internships to sophomore through junior students interested in museum curatorship, and archives.

Global Samaritan
Application and information
GS is a Christian nonprofit agency providing humanitarian aid  in the United States and around the world. Since 1999, they have collected America surplus, sending it wherever needed in suitcases, pallets and in 40’ containers of love.

The Grace Museum
Application and information
The Grace Museum is recognized as an asset for its cultural heritage as well as its educational opportunities. Accredited by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM), The Grace conforms to the highest operational and professional standards. 

City Attorney’s Office
Application and information
It is the goal of the City Attorney’s Office to provide the highest quality of legal representation and service possible to the City of Abilene.

International Rescue Committee Abilene
Application and information
(IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. Help the Abilene branch of IRC process and serve refugees from across the world and get them settled in their new homes.

World’s Backyard
A group dedicated to ministering to the children of low income families and refugees in Abilene through relationships, sports, and worship. Opportunities to tutor, coach, and lead Bible studies. Contact for Volunteer opportunities.

National Society of Leadership and Success
The NSLS is a group that strives to cultivate leadership abilities among college students. NSLS provides the opportunity to attend leadership classes and develop skills in communication, management, etc.
Paid internship for Spring 2013, responsible for starting a chapter of the honor society (Sigma Alpha Pi) on campus, provides an opportunity to showcase skills in leadership, management and communication. Apply on website.

Red Thread Movement
An organization started by ACU Alumni that seeks to combat sex trafficking and rehabilitate girls that have been victimized in Northern India and Nepal. Contact Ryan Clements at for volunteer opportunities.

Redeemed Ministries Internship – Houston, TX
Redeemed Ministries works to raise awareness and combat the sex trafficking industry in the United States at their Houston office. 
Work with this FBO to combat trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation in the United States at RM’s Houston office.

Center for Strategic and International Studies – Washington D.C.
CSIS scholars provide strategic insights and bipartisan policy solutions to help decision-makers chart a course toward a better world. 
Summer internship for students interested in public policy, in Washington D.C.

Stratfor Analyst Development Program – Austin, TX
Stratfor is a geopolitical intelligence firm that provides strategic analysis and forecasting to individuals and organizations around the world. By placing global events in a geopolitical framework, they help customers anticipate opportunities and better understand international developments. The ADP program trains those selected to become global analysts.

George Washington’s Mount Vernon
Application and information
Each year, Mount Vernon's Department of Historic Trades accepts a select number of applicants for summer internships. With focus on the Pioneer Farm and George Washington's Distillery & Gristmill, these internships provide an excellent opportunity for undergraduate students to become immersed in 18th-century history, agriculture, and industry.
