Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in History with Teacher Certification (7-12)

Admission Requirements for the Teacher Education Program

Before taking more than 6 hours of any combination of EACH, EDUC, READ or SPED courses, students must be admitted to the Teacher Education Program. Admission requirements are:

  1. Have health and physical clearance from the university doctor or nurse;
  2. Complete 60 or more approved hours;
  3. Have approval by the dean of students;
  4. Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.70;
  5. Successfully pass all sections of the TASP with a score of 260 or higher on the reading section;
  6. Complete a test on critical thinking skills with a satisfactory score;
  7. Complete and submit an application for admission to the Teacher Education Admissions Committee;
  8. Have a grade of C or above in 9 hours of English;
  9. Submit satisfactory recommendations from 3 faculty members;
  10. Complete an interview with the Teacher Education Admissions Committee;
  11. Receive approval of the Teacher Education Admissions Committee.

Departmental requirements for the BS History for Teachers (7-12) are as follows:

  1. GEOG 354 Cultural Geography
  2. HIST 117 Civilization I  
  3. HIST 118 Civilization II  or HIST 131 World History
  4. HIST 221 American History I  
  5. HIST 222 American History II  
  6. HIST 480 Texas History  
  7. HIST 496 History for Teachers  
  8. 18 hours of advanced history evenly distributed between U.S.history, European history, and non-European world cultures; must include one writing-intensive course.  
  9. ECON 260 Principles of Macroeconomics  
  10. HIST 353 Historical Methods
  11. POLS 226 States and Federal System  or POLS 225 National Government

Teacher Certification Requirements

To be certified to teach, students must complete the following additional courses and requirements:

  1. EDUC 211 Educational Foundations and Multicultural Perspectives
  2. EDUC 221 Educational Psychology
  3. EDUC 412 Secondary Curriculum and Media (capstone)
  4. EDUC 432 Secondary Management and Methods (capstone course)
  5. EDUC 476 Effective Strategies for English Language Learners
  6. EDUC 490 Student Teaching (capstone course)
  7. READ 322 Reading in Secondary Content Areas
  8. SPED 371 Teaching Students With Special Needs (writing-intensive course)
  9. Electives – 3 hours
  10. Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75.
  11. Total hours 128 hours
