Student Activites and Programs

International Dinners
Most Friday nights throughout the academic year, an Abilene couple hosts a dinner for all international students in their home, 2500 Lincoln Ave., at 6 p.m. The dinner is free and is a great chance to meet and fellowship with other international students. After dinner, there is a time of worship and a short devotional. If you do not have a vehicle to get there, the CIE offers van rides there and back. The van stops at the back patio of Nelson Hall at 5:45 p.m. and then at University Park Apartments at 5:50 p.m. and returns students to those two locations when the dinner is over.

Conversation Partners Program
ACU’s Conversation Partners Program allows students whose first language is not English to practice social English language skills with native speakers. One English language learner student is paired with one native English speaker who is also an ACU student. Partners meet for one hour each week to talk with each other. The location and time is set by the pairs of students themselves, wherever and whenever is most convenient for them. It can be in the library or another place on campus, or even off campus. Each student will be provided with a list of conversation topics and guidelines for the weekly meetings. This program is a good option if you want to improve your English in more informal, social settings outside of the academic classroom and get to know a U.S. student better. If you are interested, please contact Leanne Moore in the CIE at 325-674-2821 or lmm10b@acu.edu.

Friendship Family Program
ACU’s Friendship Family Program allows international students and American families to meet up for a social activity once a month. Students and families are paired based on shared interests as much as possible. International students are given the opportunity to see an American home and interact with an American family off campus. Abilene families are given the opportunity to learn more about the international student’s home culture. If you are interested, please contact Leanne Moore in the CIE at 325-674-2821 or lmm10b@acu.edu.

Weekly English Grammar Workshops
Every Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the Writing Center (located on the first floor of the library), the CIE offers a workshop where students can bring their papers or their readings and get help understanding and using correct English grammar. The Writing Center is open weekdays and Sunday evening to assist students with writing projects. The grammar workshops, however, are a specialized time for English language learners and are conducted in a group setting. In addition to helping students with writing assignments, these sessions are also for reading assignments or for general questions on the grammar students hear in classes or social settings. It is a time to focus on those pesky grammar questions particular to English language learners.

Weekly International Tea Time
Every Thursday at 3 p.m. in the CIE conference room an international tea time is hosted for international and American students. It is a time to fellowship and take a break from the day’s busy schedule and to take time to chat with friends over tea.

Weekly Seminars
Every Tuesday at 3 p.m. in the CIE conference room (or in another location as announced) weekly seminars are hosted to address issues specific to international students. They may address academic concerns, such as test-taking or reading skills, or they may address social and cultural concerns, such as U.S. culture, making friends, budgeting your money, being successful in college, or mental and physical health issues. Students can request certain topics to be addressed. The sessions last no more than an hour, sometimes less.

Workshops on OPT, CPT
Certain students may be eligible to work off-campus when the work is directly related to their course of study. You must have special permission to do this. In order to learn the process of how to apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT) or Curricular Practical Training (CPT), Lucy Dawson will offer workshops as announced during the semesters.
