Advanced Standing in the MSSW Program
The ACU School of Social Work offers advanced standing for eligible students in which, most or all of the foundation year courses can be waived. Advanced Standing students begin the 38-hour program with a six-week, 6-hour summer seminar that begins in mid-July before moving directly into the remaining 32-hours of study in the M.S. in Social Work program.
Students who live more than two hours away from Abilene have the option to do the 6-hour summer seminar as a remote technology enhanced class. The technology enhanced class option allows students to take the course in real-time remotely online. Students will also have to attend a residency in Abilene during the first week of the seminar to complete program requirements.
During this full-time one-year program, which has options for part-time as well, students engage in advanced social work practice through classroom and field practicum learning and by completing a thesis.
Eligibility for Advanced Standing:
- Completed a Bachelor of Science in Social Work (B.S.S.W.) or Bachelor of Social Work (B.S.W.) from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (directory of accredited programs) within the past 5 years. If bachelor work was not completed within the past 5 years, current social work experience may be considered;
- Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher in B.S.S.W. or B.S.W. coursework;
- Acceptable B.S.S.W. or BSW field practicum evaluation.
