Weekend Excursion
On June 15-16, 2013, Summer Academy students will drive to Dallas to see the work that ACU is doing at CitySquare as part of our weekend excursion.
Started in 1988, CitySquare is an organization that works to fight the root causes of poverty in Downtown Dallas. Visit CitySquare's website to learn more about their mission and work.
As of the fall of 2012 ACU has created a unique relationship with CitySquare. We have students from Abilene who will be living, learning and serving in the CitySquare community at CityWalk@Akard. These pioneering 15 students are a part of a new major here at ACU, called Justice and Urban Studies (JUST). This program is a step forward in ACU's understanding of the classroom as well as the question of who is our neighbor. These students, in addition to their classes, will be volunteering and working in the CitySquare organization as interns for AmeriCorps. This invaluable experience will equip them to uniquely think critically about the problem of poverty, and work to solve it, for the sake of the world.
Our Summer Academy students will be joining our JUST students for one weekend to learn about the problem of urban poverty in Dallas and some of the ways ACU and CitySquare are working to solve it.
Visit ACU's CitySquare blog for more information about the work ACU is doing in Downtown Dallas and watch the Vision Video!
We look forward to introducing our students to the exciting work we are doing in Dallas during this weekend excursion.
