Theological reading room to be dedicated Sept. 19

A new theological reading room, located in the Stevens Wing of Abilene Christian University’s Brown Library, will be dedicated Sept. 19 at 1:30 p.m. in honor of Gaines B. Stanley Sr.
The reading room was funded by a gift from Gaines Stanley Jr. in honor of his father, who graduated from ACU in 1950.

“The reading room highlights a collection that goes to the very heart of institutional identity and purpose,” said Dr. Mark Tucker, dean of Library and Information Services. “Each year 3,000 undergraduate students at ACU study the Bible, and biblical and theological subjects. About half of our 600-plus graduate students are enrolled in the Graduate School of Theology. The Stanley Theological Reading Room is a resource these students will use daily.”

The reading room contains resources and books on topics including biblical studies, theology, church history, devotional literature, religions of all types, philosophy and ethics, said Tucker.

Stanley Sr. currently teaches at Southern California School of Evangelism in Buena Park, Calif., and has preached at Central Church of Christ in Anaheim, Calif., since 1981. He also directs the Leading Edge Christian School, a preschool and day school, with his wife, Jean.

The Sept. 19 dedication will include prayers led by Larry James, CEO of Central Dallas Ministries, and Craig Churchill, theological librarian and associate professor of library science. Gaines B. Stanley Sr. will also make brief comments.
