ACU’s sports information director receives prestigious media award

June 12, 2006

Lance Fleming, Abilene Christian University's sports information director, was selected by the American Volleyball Coaches Association to receive the 2005-06 AVCA Grant Burger Media Award, an award which recognizes the recipient as the top volleyball sports information director in the NCAA Division II Southwest Region.

Fleming serves as the primary media contact for ACU's nationally ranked women's volleyball programs, as well as the university's 12 other sports. Last year the Wildcats finished 31-4 and reached the championship match of the NCAA Division II Southwest Region volleyball tournament before they lost to No. 1-ranked Nebraska-Kearney. ACU won a university record 31 straight matches before losing to the Lady Lopers, and finished the season ranked No. 12 in the country.

Last year, he was the media coordinator for the NCAA Division II outdoor track and field championships, Lone Star Conference post-season baseball tournament, post-season volleyball tournament and NCAA Division II South Central Region baseball tournament.

Fleming also provided play-by-play broadcasts of the ACU women's volleyball team at its regional tournament, along with men's and women's basketball, baseball and softball.

"I'm honored to have earned this award," said Fleming, who just completed his eighth year at ACU.  "Part of the joy of my job is telling the stories of our student-athletes, and with as much success as ACU enjoyed last year, telling those stories was easy.  What made last year's volleyball season so enjoyable was that I had a great group to work with, from head coach Brek Horn and assistant coach Sarah Carthel to the players. This award is just a by-product of all the hard work they put in toward having the kind of season they enjoyed."

The AVCA expanded the Grant Burger Media Award's scope in 2004-05 by having a finalist in four different categories: broadcast, print, web and sports information/athletic communications. Further, the finalist for the sports information/athletic communications category came from region winners from each of the NCAA divisions.

"Lance is very deserving of this award," said Jared Mosley, ACU athletics director. "He has done a tremendous job covering and promoting all of our sports to local and regional outlets. His work during the volleyball season was exceptional and allowed us to really promote the many individual and team accomplishments earned this season."
