ACU WorldWide launches two new master’s degree programs online, uses Apple Video iPod technology as study tool

April 13, 2006

Abilene Christian University is taking distance education to the cutting edge by launching ACU WorldWide, a new program offering two master’s degree programs online and utilizing Apple’s Video iPod technology as an educational tool to download and access study materials at the convenience of the iPod user.

ACU WorldWide offers this new level of online learning designed to empower the busy professional.

“Through the unique integration of dedicated instructors, innovative curriculum, and fresh technology, we provide a quality experience designed to enhance your personal success,” said Dr. Gary Tucker, director of distance education. “These distinctive programs allow you to attain your educational goals while meeting the responsibilities of job and family.

“Readings can be downloaded to the iPod and students can listen to the readings and view videos anywhere they can use an iPod,” Tucker said. “Working with an iPod like this puts us in the forefront of education trends, especially in the distance learning environment.”

The two master’s programs currently offered are a master’s degree in Leadership of Learning  and a master’s degree in Conflict Resolution and Reconciliation.

“Both of these new degrees aim to further our mission of educating for Christian service and leadership,” said Dr. Carol Williams, dean of ACU’s graduate school and associate provost for research and service. “Whether teaching people to be peacemakers in the Conflict Resolution and Reconciliation degree or helping school personnel to nurture children’s minds in a safe and caring environment in the Leadership of Learning degree, the courses will infuse Christian ethics and values throughout.”

The Master of Education in Leadership of Learning is a 39-hour online degree program designed to empower educational leaders who promote instruction in safe and productive learning environments.

The program focuses on learning for all students and offers a unique emphasis on conflict resolution to equip educators with relevant skills critical for handling conflict and incorporating peacemaking into daily life.

The 36-hour Master of Arts in Conflict Resolution and Reconciliation exposes students to theory and skill development experiences while learning multiple perspectives on conflict and developing a creative foundation for problem solving.

The goal of the program is to equip leaders and professionals with the tools for managing conflict and provide the negotiation skills needed to restore and develop productive environments.

A 15-hour graduate certificate in conflict resolution is also available for individuals who are not seeking a master’s degree yet desire specialized education in conflict management.

The costs of the ACU WorldWide programs are based on set fees with the program price covering tuition, fees, all textbooks, course materials and the video iPod. When students complete admission requirements and are registered, their class materials are shipped to them through ACU’s Campus Store. A special version of the Apple Video iPod is included with their course materials.

For students beginning in fall 2006, the cost of the Master of Education in Leadership of Learning is $15,000. The cost of the Master of Arts in Conflict Resolution and Reconciliation degree program is $20,000 and the certificate program costs $7,500. (Pricing is based on continuous enrollment.)

Williams explained classes will be offered in seven-week formats to be as convenient as possible for working professionals. Students enroll in one seven-week class at a time, have one week off, then start another seven-week class.

“It’s quality and convenience,” she said.

Online registration is now open, but course work doesn’t start until the 2006 fall semester. The enrollment process begins at

Inquiries are already coming in from around the world, Williams said.

“As Abilene Christian University enters its second century, we are affirming our commitment to lifelong learners by launching ACU WorldWide,” Tucker said. “Understanding that today's graduate students face a complex world of challenges and clashing ideologies that place unprecedented demands on time and personal resources, ACU WorldWide is dedicated to meeting specific needs by providing new innovative online programs.”
