S.E. “Sam” McReynolds Jr., professor emeritus of mathematics, dies

S.E. "Sam" McReynolds Jr., associate professor of mathematics at Abilene Christian University, died Thursday in Abilene at Hendrick Medical Center.

Funeral services are scheduled at 2 p.m. Sunday at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory Street in downtown Abilene. An opportunity for visitation will follow the service.  A second service will be held in McReynolds’ hometown of Morrilton, Ark., Wednesday, with burial following.

McReynolds joined the ACU faculty in 1960 as an assistant professor of mathematics after serving two years as an associate professor of math and physics at Pepperdine University.  He became an associate professor in 1966.  In 1981 he was named Outstanding Teacher of the Year by the university, and in 1987 he was named an outstanding professor in the College of Natural and Applied Sciences.  He retired after 38 years of teaching in 1998.

While at ACU, he was an active member of the Library Committee, Purpose Committee, and Financial Aid Committee and also served on the Faculty Senate and on the Academic Council of the College of Arts and Sciences.

McReynolds was a member of the S. 11th and Willis Church of Christ, was an avid supporter of missions, both domestic and abroad, and served on the world missions committee at the congregation.

He received a Bachelor of Science degree in math from the University of Central Arkansas and a master's in pure mathematics from the University of Texas. Professionally, he was a member of the Mathematical Association of America, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and the National Association of Industrial and Applied Mathematics.  McReynolds served in the U.S. Navy in 1945-46 and was a member of the Alpha Chi National Honor Society.

McReynolds is survived by five cousins of Arlington and Morrilton, Ark.
