The Society of Physics Students has selected the Abilene Christian University chapter of the organization as an Outstanding SPSP Chapter for the 2004-2005 school year, an award given to less than 10 percent of the SPS chapters throughout the nation.

"Anyone can start a chapter of SPS," said Dr. Rusty Towell, adviser for ACU's SPS chapter and professor in the Department of Physics. "But if you get this award , it's a good indication of the quality of the chapter."

ACU's chapter was selected because of the depth of the activities conducted by participants.  Areas such as physics research, physics tutoring programs, public science outreach, hosting and representation at physics meetings and providing social interaction for chapter members.

Gary White, director of SPS, said in a letter, "This award is a testament to you personal leadership skills as much as it is an acknowledgement of your chapter's superior performance."

Towell said that this award will prove useful in attracting students considering ACU for an education in science becuase it shows how involved the chapter's students are.
