Dr. Harold Wilkinson, longtime professor of education, dies

Dr. Harold Wilkinson, a professor of education at Abilene Christian University for 28 years, died Monday, Jan. 30, at age 87.  Funeral services were today at 11 a.m. at High Pointe Church of Christ in McKinney.  Wilkinson and his wife, Leatrice, lived in McKinney. 

Visitation will be held in Abilene from 1:00-1:30 p.m, Thursday, Feb. 2, at the University Church of CHrist Family Room.  Following visitation will be a short memorial service held in the UCC Chapel.  Burial service will be at Elmwood Memorial Park, 5750 South Hwy 277, at 2:00 p.m.

Wilkinson taught at at ACU from 1961 to 1989, during which time he served as coordinator of the elementary education program, supervising 250 student teachers. 

After 14 years in the public school system as an elementary teacher, coach and administrator, Wilkinson joined the ACU faculty specializing in elementary education and administration and child development.  In addition to his teaching, Wilkinson was sought after to perform in-service training sessions for regional school districts, and assisted local congregations in Bible school programs and teacher training.

Wilkinson was active in the Abilene Chapter of the Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association in promoting education about Alzheimer's disease after his first wife, Willie, former professor of political science at ACU was diagnosed with the disease and preceded him in death.

On campus, Wilkinson served on the Board of Directors of the Friends of the ACU Brown Library, Athlietic Committee, Graduate Council and Faculty Senate.  Professionally, he was involved in Phi Delta Kappa, serving as president of the local chapter, the Texas State Teachers Association and the National Educators Association.

Wilkinson was born in Ft. Worth Sept. 3, 1919.  He attended Southwestern State University in Oklahoma for his undergraduate studies and earned a master's degree and a doctorate from Texas Tech University.  Please visit http://www.turrentinejacksonmorrow.com/detail.php?id=1484 for more information.

Memorials may be made to an endowed scholarship in the name of Harold A. Wilkinson at Abilene Christian University or to High Pointe Church of Christ Missions.
