Interior design program to offer seminar

Jan. 12, 2006

Abilene Christian University’s interior design program is offering a two-hour continuing education seminar Monday, Jan. 30, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Kristi Thomas, president/CEO of Accessology, Inc., the largest U.S. consulting firm dedicated solely to access issues, will present "Beyond Access Compliance" in Hart Auditorium in the College of Biblical Studies building on the ACU campus.

Thomas' knowledge of access and compliance will be beneficial for building officials, architects, interior designers and others interested in handicapped accessibility issues. Continuing education credit is available for some, if interested.

The registration fee (payable at the door) is $20 for registered interior designers and architects wanting continuing education credit. If credit is not desired, the seminar is free.

Thomas founded Accessology, Inc., in 1991 after 12 years in the airline industry where she played a crucial role in ensuring compliance with the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA).

Since 1991 Accessology has grown to provide not only state plan reviews and inspections, but national and international consulting services as well. With Thomas as its principal consultant, Accessology specializes in consulting for campus built environments.

Considered a true expert in her field, Thomas is also a sought after witness for ADA/ACAA legal cases and has been named for more than 40 cases nationwide.

The Jan. 30 course, "Beyond Access Compliance," explores the constant concern of complying with access standards.

Participants will learn how to create better access with new and innovative approaches that focus on exceeding minimum standards and how to be recognized for it.

Participants will be able to identify where greater access is most beneficial and achievable, how to apply a more creative approach to accessible design and how to market this approach to the public at large.

To register in advance or for more information, contact Kitty Wasemiller, ACU professor and interior design program director, at 325-674-2087 or

Registration also will be available at the door. ACU's interior design program is FIDER accredited.
