ACU to honor Parents of the Year

September 29, 2005

John and Jean Isom of Tuscola will be honored Friday as Abilene Christian University’s Parents of the Year and will be recognized during daily Chapel service. The Isoms are the parents of ACU student Jordan Isom, senior English major from Tuscola.

"We didn't think they gave awards for doing things you enjoy," said Jean, a 1975 graduate of ACU. "It's a real delight being a parent. We go through life cheering on our kids, and we don’t expect to get anything other than seeing what they achieve."

Jean teaches part time in the ACU sociology department, and John, a 1976 graduate of ACU, started John Isom Fence in 1977 and has been running it since.

Each year students submit an essay nominating their parents for the Parents of the Year award. The Isoms were chosen based on Jordan's essay.

"Their service to the Lord, to ACU and to everyone around them began long before I was born," Jordan said. "They have received the talents that God has given them and developed them into fruit for the Lord."

John and Jean are also active members of Highland Church of Christ in Abilene.

"He is a Christian man who lives simply, works with his hands for the Lord and teaches by example," Jordan said of her father.

She went on to say of her mother, "Mom took experience and success in the business world and instead of pursing recognition, used her skills to humbly serve as a woman of the church and a mother."

Dr. Gary McCaleb, vice president of the university, will be presenting the award to the Isoms during Chapel on Friday. A reception in their honor will be in the Campus Center Living Room after Chapel.
