Tri-university music concert to benefit Katrina victims

September 19, 2005

Faculty and students from the music departments of Abilene Christian University, Hardin-Simmons University and McMurry University will combine talents in a benefit concert for victims of Hurricane Katrina. The concert, titled "A Concert for Hurricane Relief," will be in the ACU Williams Performing Arts Center recital hall on Sept. 29 at 8 p.m.

The idea for the concert came from students at ACU who were interested in putting on a benefit performance, said Dr. Greg Straughn, chair of ACU's Department of Music and coordinator of the benefit concert.

"ACU's student music organization wanted to do a benefit concert that would involve students and faculty,” Straughn said. "We decided it would be even better to invite students and faculty from all three universities to participate, and we have had an overwhelming response."

The concert will include romantic masterworks, Broadway show tunes, Brazilian choro, and two tributes to the music of New Orleans.

Student tickets are $10 each or two for $15, and adult tickets are $20 each or two for $30. Tickets can be purchased with cash, check, or credit card at the door or in advance by calling 325-674-2199.

Proceeds from all ticket sales will be donated to the American Red Cross.
