ACU to choose new Homecoming Musical for 2005-06

"Aida" will not be performed as Abilene Christian University's Homecoming Musical this fall, according to Adam Hester, chair of ACU's theatre department. An alternate musical will be announced shortly by the university.

This decision was made after casting concerns were brought to the university's attention by some of ACU's friends in the community, Hester said.

"Our intent at ACU is to build bridges and create opportunities for reconciliation," Hester said. "Even though much planning and energy has gone into this musical by students and faculty, we feel that the care and concern for our community should come before the choice of a particular musical. We want to create goodwill in our city, and we believe it's in the best interest of the university and our friends in the community to make a substitution for 'Aida' at this time."

ACU president Dr. Royce Money said, "I commend Adam Hester in the choice he has made to seek a different musical for our Centennial year. We have one of the finest Christian university theatre programs in the nation, and Adam has shown a great deal of integrity and sensitivity in making this difficult decision.

"We have many talented students in our theatre program, and I feel certain Adam will choose an alternate musical that will showcase that talent and please our Homecoming crowd."
