Abilene Christian University graduate student Joel Daniel Rodriquez passed away Oct. 15 at his home. The exact cause of death has not been determined.
A funeral service is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 20 at 10 a.m at New Life Temple. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park under the direction of Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Highway 277 South. A prayer service will be Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Rodriquez graduated from Abilene High in June of 2000. He graduated from ACU with an undergraduate degree in psychology in May of 2004, and he was in his first semester of psychology graduate studies at ACU.
He regularly volunteered in the community with organizations such as Big Brothers Big Sisters, Habitat for Humanity and YMCA camp. He also tutored at the YMCA and at ACU as well as privately with several students throughout Abilene.
“Joel’s ambition was to work with people during the tough times of their life,” said Dr. Robert McKelvain, chair of the Department of Psychology. “He had already begun living that out, through his volunteer work in outreach activities for children and young people.”
Survivors include his father Jose Rodriquez of Florida, his mother and step-father Victoria and Jerome Andino of Abilene; Brother Antoine Rodriquez of Virginia; Three step- sisters Tiffany Matos of Connecticut, Michele Andino of Massachusetts Crissy Andino of Massachusetts. Four step-brothers Michael Andino, Brian Andino; Tom Andino and Erick Andino all of New York City; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
