ACU reading clinic receives $100,000 from government

Nov. 23, 2004

As part of the spending bill approved by Congress Saturday, the federal government provided $100,000 to Abilene Christian University’s after-school reading clinic program.

The funds will be used for updating equipment and programs, said Dr. Pat Simpson, director of the reading clinic and professor of education.

“The money will help us serve more children, more effectively,” Simpson said.

Currently, the reading clinic serves about 150 students each year with after-school and summer programs. During the school year, senior education majors provide one-on-one tutoring. In the summer, graduate students specializing in reading and special education teach in the clinic.

“We believe our clinic gives ACU students specific, hands-on experience while helping a lot of children in the Abilene area,” Simpson said.

Assessment and diagnostic equipment are among the upgrades the reading clinic may see as a result of the funding, which will help the clinic pinpoint a wider range of reading problems. One-way glass for demonstrations, specialized microphones, a designated area for parent consultations, and eye-tracking tools are just a few of the equipment possibilities for the new funding.

As a part of ACU’s Centennial Campaign, fundraising is underway for a newly-renovated building for the School of Education, and some of the upgrades to the reading clinic may come after the transition to a new building, Simpson said.
