ACU hires collection curator for Centennial

For immediate release
October 8, 2004

Abilene Christian University hired Becky Estrella as curator for the Centennial Collection, a position designed for the planning and implementation of historical exhibitions related to the university's Centennial Celebration.

Estrella is the acquisitions coordinator for Brown Library, and will continue that position part time until January 1 when she will become full-time curator of the Centennial Collection.

The purpose of the Centennial Collection is to accumulate memorabilia that tells the story of the university, both old and new.  Diaries, letters, club memorabilia, and items from Homecoming, Sing Song and other university events are expected, Estrella said.

"The thing I am looking forward to as curator is being able to 'touch'’ history and use the items collected to tell the story of this institution," Estrella said.  "I get really excited over every artifact that comes into the collection, and it will be difficult to select what we want to display."

Exhibits will go up in during summer 2005 and will stay up through the centennial year.  Most of the exhibits will be indoors around the older buildings, but something will be included in nearly every building at ACU.

"The story of the university will not be complete unless all years are represented; it is just as important to have items from 1999 as it is from 1920," Estrella said.  "Anything that was used on campus is important, and what others may think is junk might be a real treasure for this collection."
