Sun Gibson, junior accounting major from Abilene, was awarded a scholarship from the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
Gibson was the recipient of a scholarship for minority accounting students, awarded by the Minority Initiatives Committee of the AICPA.
"It's a prestigious award," said Bill Fowler, accounting and finance department chair. "It's a great honor to her that she was chosen."
This year 157 scholarships were awarded across the country with 25 of the scholarships given to students in Texas. Three of the 25 scholarships awarded in Texas were given to students attending private schools.
The scholarship awards up to $5,000 per recipient to minority students who are majoring in accounting and show potential in becoming certified public accountants.
The scholarship is part of the organization's initiatives to encourage minority students to continue in their education and eventually enter the profession.
The AICPA is a nationally recognized organization of CPAs that provides resources and information for accountants across the U.S. In the last decade, the AICPA has awarded more than $6 million in scholarships for minority students.
To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must have completed at least 30 hours of college with 6 hours of accounting classes and have a minimum GPA of 3.3. The deadline for this scholarship is in June.
