ACU honors Parents of the Year

For immediate release
Sept. 27, 2004

Morton and Suzy Jeffrey of North Richland Hills were honored Friday as Abilene Christian University’s Parents of the Year and were recognized during daily Chapel service.

The Jeffreys are the parents of ACU student Andy Jeffrey, a senior integrated marketing communication major, and three ACU alumni – Kelly Vaughn (’92), Becky Brooks (’96) and Sam Jeffrey (’00).

"We have always wanted our children to be in places where Christ was intentionally lifted up," Morton and Suzy said.  "We have prayed that throughout our lives they would be a part of communities where strong relationships with other believers were encouraged.  Christian education provided those opportunities for our children."

Every year, ACU students are asked to nominate their parents for the Parents of the Year award with a written essay.  The Jeffreys were chosen based on Andy’s essay and essays from the Jeffrey’s other three children.

"My parents have honored me by guiding me to ACU," Andy said in his nomination.  "As I look to honor them by graduating in 2005, I can think of no award they deserve more than ACU Parents of the Year."

Andy's brother and sisters shared similar sentiments in regard to their ACU educations and the value their parents placed on a Christian college experience.

"My parents knew the value of higher education, yet the decision was always clear that they wanted their children to excel academically where Christ is esteemed and the faith and teaching of Christian professors would play a vital influence in the lives of their children," Kelly said.

Sam said, "The encouragement I received from my parents taught me an incredible lesson - one ACU would reinforce later - that the only boundary to what I could accomplish in life, was the extent to which I allow God to work through me."

Becky summed up what it means to the Jeffrey children for their parents to receive this award.  "The mission statement of ACU - to educate students for Christian service and leadership throughout the world - is one held close to my heart, for in   honoring those words, I honor the two people who enabled me to experience it."

Suzy is a 1971 graduate of ACU.  Dr. Royce Money, ACU president, presented the award to the Jeffreys during Chapel Friday, Sept. 24.
