For the first time in Abilene Christian University's history, a residence hall offers its own meal service. The new kitchen in Adams and Smith residence halls serves three meals each day for residents and other students.
The kitchen was installed in the communal lobby of the halls this summer after requests were made by the students last year, said Mimi Barnard, director of residence life education and housing.
Expansion of ARAMARK's serving area was made along with the kitchen installation. Although several residence halls offer a kitchen area, this is the first to offer full meal service by ARAMARK in the residence hall.
"That was not a part of the initial idea; it developed over time," Barnard said.
ARAMARK will serve three hot meals a day from the expanded area. Students were surveyed on food preferences. Smith and Adams residence halls are located a few blocks away from ACU's main campus. This gives students the option to eat meals in the residence hall rather than commuting back to campus for meals at the World Famous Bean, ACU's main cafeteria.
Students will be able to use Bean Bucks and meal plans for the meals, which will be transported from the Bean to the kitchen.
"It's all about service and convenience for students," Barnard said.
