The artwork of 21 Abilene Christian University students who attended the summer study abroad art program will be on display in the Shore Art Gallery opening Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. and running through Oct. 1.
Every two years the Department of Art and Design takes students to Europe for six weeks of study and travel. This summer, students spent 20 days in Oxford, England; 15 days traveling Spain in the cities of Madrid, Granada and Barcelona; and 10 days traveling Italy in the cities of Rome, Florence, Ferrara and Venice.
"Seeing the architecture and sculptures first-hand was so much better than learning from the textbook," said Tyler King, senior interior design major from Abilene. "I really got some direction as far as what I want to do for a career, and seeing everything in person was really inspiring."
Faculty leaders Ronnie Rama, assistant professor of art and design, and Nil Santana, instructor of art and design, taught classes such as basic visual communication, on-site drawing, art photography, and art history and faith.
"Students pursuing an art and design education benefit from directly from this program," Rama said. "They experience first hand the art, history and architecture that have been a vital part of their education."
